Luke Gartland
Senior Software Engineer | Agricultural Data Platforms & API Architecture
Summary
Senior Software Engineer with 6+ years of experience specializing in large-scale data platforms and API architecture. At DTN, engineered agricultural data systems serving 34M+ land parcels and 15M+ parties, including co-inventing the patent-pending Pseudo Farms geospatial aggregation method that collapsed 34M land parcels into 1.2M farm entities and reduced a 5-minute background process to a 2-second real-time query. Also architected a 7-API federated GraphQL layer, delivered DTN's first cross-sector weather/ag/energy data integration (an industry first), and built the company's first AI agent integration into agricultural data via the Ag Semantic API. A consistent award winner recognized at every level of the organization: monthly and quarterly company-wide awards, direct CEO recognition, and selected to demo enterprise products alongside the CTO for ADM, Louis Dreyfus Company, and Cargill.
Experience
Senior Software Engineer· DTN
Dec 2022 – PresentRemote, Omaha, NE (HQ)
- Pseudo Farms initiative (patent pending): Identified an internal ML algorithm, originally built for data science, as a platform-level opportunity, then proposed and led its adoption as the canonical farm data layer across all ag products.
- Pseudo Farms results: Tested 2,368 real production segments, achieving a 12x average speedup (max 3,533x) and reducing a 5-minute background job to a 2-second real-time query. Collapsed 34M land parcels into 1.2M farms (29x reduction) and surfaced 560K canonicalized producers, the first clean, deduplicated list of actual farm operators in DTN's history, an insight that became a standalone data asset. Drove cross-functional alignment across engineering, product, and leadership.
- Ag Semantic API: Designed, built, and deployed to production a multi-sector GraphQL layer merging 7 federated AWS AppSync source APIs (producers, farms, crop metrics, storage, facilities, land parcels), managing 80+ AWS resources via Terraform. Implemented a PostGIS spatial query engine supporting polygon intersection, point-radius, and FIPS-code geographic scoping across millions of records.
- Cross-sector data integration (industry first): Connected DTN's weather, agriculture, and energy semantic APIs into a unified supply chain layer, demonstrating drought conditions to crop impact to downstream biofuel terminal exposure. Presented live to ADM, Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC), and Cargill alongside the CTO and senior leadership.
- Farm Intel External API: Launched DTN's first externally-sold, credit-metered agricultural data API: 27 OpenAPI 3.0-documented endpoints, multi-issuer JWT auth, and RFC 7807 error standardization. Onboarded the first external customer.
- AI Agent platform: Delivered the Smart Portfolios AI agent integration end-to-end and stabilized the ODP platform across 4 services: diagnosed a corrupted token bug (illegal base64 in JWT), resolved agent guardrail false-positives, fixed a missing lciIds parameter causing null crop data, and unblocked the platform team.
- Documentation: Authored Ag Data Domains, a cross-sector architectural reference for DTN's Unified Data Layer initiative covering 10 business domains, published to Confluence as the company-wide standard.
- Security: Fixed an IDOR vulnerability in Farm Intel, led the security audit response for external pen test findings, and documented 5 auth security gaps with remediation plans.
- Namespace Management API: Shipped a 68-endpoint spec-driven REST API (Fastify / TypeScript / DynamoDB) from scratch, with 234 passing tests and a full GitLab CI/CD pipeline (Docker, ECR publish).
- Top Gun / McKinsey program: Hand-selected for DTN's high-priority engineering initiative, a collaboration with McKinsey & Company focused on industry-changing agricultural technology under high visibility and executive pressure.
